2016 Arts of the Angler Show November 5th & 6th 2016

It’s fall and time once again for the shows to begin. One of my favorite shows is the Arts of the Angler Show in Danbury Connecticut. This show is sponsored by the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum. Its an intimate show and offers a chance for some one-on-one encounters with some of the east coasts best tiers. It also offers the fly fisherman the opportunity to acquire some great materials and check out some bamboo finery.
I’ll be there tying and showing some artwork.

Dr. Slick Pro Team

I’m excited to announce that I’m now on the Dr. Slick Pro Team. Those of you who have seen me tying at shows and various events, have seen numerous Dr. Slick scissors including my favorite, the 4 inch Razor Scissor, strewn across my tying area. Tying The Wally Wing Peccary Spinner

With spring just around the corner, many of us are working hard to fill our fly boxes for the coming season. It’s no secret that the Wally Wing Peccary Spinner is one of my favorites. I’m often asked to demo the pattern while tying at shows. Last March, Tim Flagler of Tightlines Productions, offered me the opportunity to demonstrate this pattern on camera. Try this wing style for both down wing and upwing, posted patterns. It’s a real winner.

No More Bad Hair Days

One of the great things about tying at a fly fishing show, is that you get to see all the newest tools and materials. If you’re a gear head, like me, there are some that you just can’t do without.
That being said, as much as I enjoy working with deer hair, sometimes it can be frustrating. Aside from making sure you have the right hair for spinning, the hair must be packed tightly and trimmed precisely to get that perfect popper or muddler minnow. Here are two tools that greatly streamline the process. The first is Cohen’s Fugly Packer. The Frogulator

Here’s an easy-to-tie foam bodied frog pattern for the dog days of summer. I tied this to try out Pat Cohen’s pre-cut Frog Legs. www.rusuperfly.com. The body is created out of 1/2” diameter insulation foam. This is readily available at most hardware stores. Shape the body with a razor blade, cut a horizontal slit in the foam, and use CA adhesive to glue the legs in. You can reinforce with thread but I haven’t found it necessary. The pattern uses .125” yellow map tacks for the eyes and rubber legs for the front arms.
This fly is definitely tied to throw so nothing fancy about the paint job. Coat the eyes with some Clear Cure Goo Hydro and take it to the water. The silhouette is just perfect.
